China tightens regulations for EV chargers and automotive chips
China is implementing stricter quality controls for the electric vehicle (EV) and automotive semiconductor sectors. The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has mandated 3C certification for EV charging equipment, effective August 1, 2024. Under these rules, uncertified charging stands are prohibited from being shipped, sold, or imported. A recent inspection of 112 household charging products sold on major e-commerce platforms revealed a 49.1% failure rate, with many products failing to safely disconnect power during malfunctions, posing fire risks.
In a separate move to bolster the domestic semiconductor industry, China has released five new industry standards for the certification and evaluation of automotive chip institutions. These standards, which will take effect on October 1, 2026, establish a national framework for evaluating the capabilities of organizations involved in the design, testing, and certification of automotive chips. This initiative aims to create a more reliable quality assurance system for domestic chips to support the growth of the smart connected vehicle industry.
