China to Build 1,100 Agricultural Storage and Distribution Facilities by 2030

China announced a plan to construct or modernise roughly 1,100 agricultural storage and distribution infrastructures by 2030. The programme includes about 100 strategic national warehouses and around 1,000 distribution centres, linked into a network of six horizontal corridors, seven vertical corridors and two coastal axes. It also calls for the creation or upgrade of 1,000 standardized agricultural service centres over the next five years and aims to add about 700,000 tonnes of grain‑storage capacity this year.

The initiative is part of the 2026‑2030 development plan of the National Federation of Chinese Supply and Marketing Cooperatives, the main state channel for agricultural inputs. It is presented as a measure to ensure food security, boost self‑sufficiency and reduce reliance on grain imports. President Xi Jinping warned in 2023 that, despite 1.4 billion Chinese having adequate food, the country must not relax on food‑security issues. With 18 % of the world’s population but less than 9 % of arable land, China views the project as essential to a “efficient and fluid” supply chain and to curb post‑harvest losses.
