China to Build World's Largest Onshore LNG Storage Tanks at Yuedong Terminal

China's Yuedong LNG Terminal in Guangdong province will add three onshore storage tanks, each with a capacity of 240,000 cubic metres. The tanks, slated for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2028, are designed by French specialist GTT using its GST membrane full‑containment technology and will be the largest of their kind worldwide.

The project, part of the strategic natural‑gas hub in Jieyang City, is expected to boost the terminal’s storage capacity, strengthen energy security and allow flexibility to store other liquefied gases such as ethane, propane, ethylene and ammonia. GTT says the GST design can cut steel requirements by about 40% and increase storage density by up to 10% within the same footprint.

François Michel, GTT CEO, said the project “highlights the growing role of membrane containment technology in large‑scale energy infrastructure.” Xu Gang, President of China Chengda Engineering, added, “We are delighted to renew our collaboration with GTT on the construction of the world’s largest membrane full‑containment tanks… this project reflects our shared commitment to delivering advanced, safe and efficient LNG infrastructure solutions.”
