China to expand water network coverage to 82% by 2030
China plans to intensify the development of its modern water network during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030). Water Resources Minister Li Guoying announced that the national water network is expected to cover 82% of the country's territory by 2030.
Key objectives include strengthening flood protection by improving reservoirs, rivers, and embankments, while enhancing monitoring through satellite and radar technology. By the end of 2030, the country aims to add 15 billion cubic meters of reservoir storage capacity and ensure 91% of main embankments meet required standards.
The initiative also focuses on optimizing water resource allocation, modernizing irrigation systems, and standardizing water management in rural areas. Specific targets include adding 2.67 million hectares of irrigated farmland and reaching a 98% drinking water coverage rate in rural regions. Additionally, the government intends to restore aquatic ecosystems and address soil erosion across 310,000 square kilometers.
