China to integrate set-top box functions into television software

China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, is developing technical standards for integrated television. This initiative aims to replace traditional external set-top boxes by embedding their functions directly into television software. The goal is to create a simplified user experience where a single universal remote can control all functions, allowing users to access live and on-demand services with one click.

Implementation will involve software-based integration or small USB-style adapters that can make many existing smart TVs compatible with the new standards. The NRTA aims for large-scale deployment reaching tens of millions of units by 2026. The standards prioritize user experience, security, and compatibility with domestic audio and video formats.

In related regulatory news, the NRTA addressed the rise of AI-generated content. Officials stated that AI-produced programs must include clear identifiers and require human oversight during critical production and auditing stages to prevent unauthorized or subversive AI-driven adaptations. Additionally, the NRTA reported significant progress in cleaning up false pharmaceutical advertisements on television and managing the rapid growth of AI-generated micro-dramas.
