China exports surge 25% in August driven by high-tech demand
China's exports surged 25% year-on-year in August, reaching $401.44 billion. This growth was primarily driven by strong global demand for high-tech goods, semiconductors, and automobiles, particularly electric vehicles. The expansion in exports helped bolster the economy amid sluggish domestic consumption and a continuing downturn in the property market.
Imports also saw a significant increase, rising 28.2% to $282.36 billion. Consequently, China's trade surplus expanded to approximately $119.1 billion in August, up from $112.5 billion in July. The manufacturing sector showed signs of recovery, with the PMI rising to 49.8 in August, supported by a return of new orders.
Despite the export strength, domestic economic challenges persist, including weak retail sales and investment. The growing trade surplus continues to draw scrutiny from Western policymakers, particularly in the United States and the European Union.
