Arctic shipping route connects China and UK via Northern Sea Route

Shipping companies are establishing a new seasonal container service through the Arctic to connect China and Europe. Sea Legend Shipping has launched the ‘China-Europe Arctic Express’, also referred to as the ‘Polar Silk Road’, which utilizes the Northern Sea Route along the Russian Arctic coast.

In partnership with logistics specialist Davies Turner, the service connects Ningbo, China, to Felixstowe, UK. The route aims to reduce transit times significantly, potentially cutting travel from 40 days to approximately 21 days. The service is scheduled to operate between August and October, with approximately eight planned sailings.

This Arctic route serves as a strategic alternative to traditional maritime passages such as the Suez Canal, the Bab el-Mandeb strait, and the Strait of Malacca. By bypassing these areas, shippers aim to avoid geopolitical tensions and security risks in the Middle East, as well as the congestion and costs associated with conventional routes. While the route offers time and fuel savings, it faces challenges including extreme weather conditions and a reliance on Russian waters.
