China unveils 100‑GW high‑power microwave weapon that could threaten Starlink satellites

Researchers at China's National University of Defense Technology published a paper describing a new class of high‑power microwave (HPM) weapons. The system can generate up to 100 gigawatts of pulse power by synchronising many compact modules, a level far beyond earlier prototypes.

Experts say a 1‑GW pulse is already sufficient to cause serious interference or permanent damage to low‑Earth‑orbit satellites. The Chinese team argues that the 100‑GW array could be used as an anti‑satellite weapon capable of disrupting or destroying constellations such as Elon Musk's Starlink, especially if those satellites are employed in military operations.

The paper also notes technical advances, including lithium‑ion hybrid capacitors that activate at –40 °C and semiconductor‑based pulse generators. Future work will focus on improving targeting accuracy, reducing size and cutting costs. The development signals a significant step forward in modern warfare and poses new challenges for nations that rely on large satellite networks.
