China unveils railway sci-tech innovation plan for 2026-2030

China has released a scientific and technological innovation plan for the railway sector covering the period of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030). Issued by the National Railway Administration (NRA), the plan aims to establish a comprehensive innovation system to modernize the country's railway network by 2030.

Key objectives for the 2026-2030 period include the construction of approximately 30 new scientific and technological innovation bases under NRA supervision. The plan targets decisive progress in at least 100 fundamental technologies and the achievement of no fewer than 500 significant scientific and technological results. Additionally, the government intends to implement at least 20 demonstration projects, such as operating high-speed trains at 400 km/h.

In terms of technical equipment, the plan emphasizes ongoing research into high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) technology capable of reaching 600 km/h. The strategy also focuses on digital and intelligent railways, safety, and sustainable, low-carbon development. Furthermore, the official 12306 ticketing platform will be upgraded into a smart service system to provide integrated intermodal travel solutions.
