China urges automakers to resist irrational competition and prioritize safety
Four Chinese government agencies—the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the State Administration for Market Regulation—have held a symposium with representatives from over 30 major automakers. The meeting focused on urging companies to resist ‘irrational competition’ and prioritize product safety through enhanced research, development, and testing protocols.
Key directives include improving the management of innovative vehicle designs and ensuring rigorous validation of new technologies. Authorities specifically warned against deceptive marketing practices, such as making false or exaggerated claims about vehicle capabilities or using promotional content that depicts traffic violations or encourages drivers to neglect safety responsibilities.
For smart and connected new-energy vehicles, manufacturers are expected to strengthen safety measures, improve safety assessment systems, and tighten oversight of the supply chain. The ministries announced plans to accelerate the formulation of relevant standards and will continue inspections of major manufacturers. Companies found to have safety or compliance issues will face strict legal actions and be publicly exposed.
