US Treasury holdings rise to $9.33 trillion amid shifting foreign ownership

According to US Treasury data, total foreign holdings of US Treasury securities rose to $9.331 trillion in August, up from $9.248 trillion in July. This increase was driven by rising holdings from the United Kingdom and Canada, despite significant selling by other major holders.

China continued to reduce its exposure, with holdings falling to $590.7 billion in August, a decrease from $618 billion in July. This marks the third consecutive month of decline and represents the lowest level of Chinese holdings since August 2008. Japan also saw a reduction, with its holdings dropping to $1.068 trillion.

In contrast, the United Kingdom's holdings surpassed the $1 trillion mark for the first time, reaching $1.009 trillion. India also saw growth, with its holdings rising to $219.7 billion. Meanwhile, the total US public debt reached the $40 trillion threshold in August, contributing to concerns regarding borrowing costs and fiscal sustainability.
