China warns Japan of heavy consequences if it revises nuclear non‑proliferation stance

China’s foreign ministry warned Japan that any move to revise its “Three Non‑Nuclear Principles” or to host allied nuclear weapons would be a “serious provocation” and impose a heavy price on Tokyo. Spokesperson Lin Jian said such steps would breach the post‑World War II order, the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and Japan’s own peace‑focused constitution.

The Chinese statement cited widespread local Japanese assemblies urging the government to retain the non‑nuclear commitments and criticised the current coalition’s push toward re‑militarisation. Beijing called on Japan to abandon any nuclear‑armed ambitions, halt “extended deterrence” cooperation, and resolve imbalances in nuclear material supply, while reaffirming its demand that Japan fulfil its NPT obligations.

China’s warning underscores rising regional tension over nuclear policy and highlights the diplomatic friction between the two Asian powers.
