China warns AI is a new arena for strategic competition

China's Minister of State Security, Chen Yixin, has identified artificial intelligence as a critical geopolitical battlefield and a new arena for strategic competition between major powers. Chen warned that AI technologies pose systemic risks to ideological security, critical information infrastructure, and national data privacy. He specifically noted that foreign intelligence agencies may use advanced data mining and profiling tools to harvest sensitive government and business information.

Chen also accused dominant technology powers of disrupting the global AI supply chain through monopolistic practices, such as technology controls and the creation of closed ecosystems. These actions, he suggested, aim to maintain technological hegemony.

In a related development, Chinese state media criticized calls from US-based AI leaders to slow the pace of AI development. The Global Times characterized Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal to regulate AI speed and tighten chip export controls as a 'Cold War-style' tactic designed to suppress China's technological progress and exclude it from global AI governance.
