China warns of genetic resource theft and biosafety risks
China's Ministry of State Security has issued a warning regarding the theft of genetic resources and cross-border risks to national biosafety. According to the ministry, foreign organizations have allegedly entered ecologically sensitive areas under the guise of tourism or scientific research to steal genetic data and resources.
The warning highlights several methods of illegal collection, including the unauthorized acquisition of human blood samples through purported medical testing. The ministry noted a significant case in 2025 where customs in Guangzhou dismantled an illegal cross-border network spanning 23 provinces involved in smuggling blood samples from pregnant women.
In addition to human genetic data, the ministry raised concerns over the smuggling of plant seeds and exotic pets. In 2025, customs officials seized 5,439 shipments of non-native species. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, authorities intercepted over 1,000 exotic animals, including insects, spiders, frogs, lizards, and snakes, emphasizing that such transfers require strict quarantine procedures and official approval.
