China warns of measures to protect interests against U.S. Iran sanctions

The Chinese government has warned it will take ‘all necessary measures’ to protect its legitimate rights and interests following threats from the United States to impose sanctions on entities maintaining economic and commercial ties with Iran.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that such unilateral sanctions lack a basis in international law and have not been authorized by the United Nations Security Council. Lin argued that ‘economic warfare and maximum pressure tactics’ do not resolve issues but instead exacerbate conflicts, create collateral risks, and disrupt the global economic and financial order.

The response follows recent announcements from Washington regarding a commercial offensive aimed at cutting off all sources of funding for Iran. This strategy includes threats of secondary sanctions against third-party countries, including China, to achieve the total economic isolation of Tehran. China maintains that its cooperation with Iran is conducted within the framework of international law and has called for a return to dialogue and negotiation to reduce tensions.
