China wind and solar capacity exceeds 2,000 GW

China's combined wind and solar power installed capacity reached 2,010 GW by the end of September 2026, according to data from the National Energy Administration. Solar power capacity stands at 1,310 GW, representing a 16.5% year-on-year increase, while wind power capacity reached 700 GW, up 20.4% from the previous year.

As of July 2026, solar power capacity surpassed coal power, marking a significant shift in the nation's energy structure. Between January and September 2026, wind and solar power generated approximately 1,933 billion kWh, accounting for 64% of the total increase in social electricity consumption.

Despite this milestone, challenges remain regarding the intermittent nature of renewable energy. Experts note that the expansion of ultra-high voltage transmission and energy storage systems is essential to manage fluctuations and transport green electricity from western regions to eastern demand centers. The current progress puts China ahead of its 2030 target of reaching over 2,800 GW of wind and solar capacity.
