China: Workers use AI to turn bosses into virtual mascots

Young workers in China are increasingly using artificial intelligence to transform their bosses and colleagues into personalized virtual desktop mascots. This trend serves as a way for employees to alleviate workplace stress and humorously channel professional frustrations.

Unlike the simple digital pets of the early 2000s, these new AI-driven avatars are highly customizable. Users upload images and behavioral instructions to specialized applications, paying anywhere from approximately 1.3 euros to several hundred yuan for customization. These mascots can perform specific actions on a computer screen, such as serving tea, crawling along web pages, or even being programmed to kneel and apologize.

While the practice offers emotional relief for those who feel unable to resign, legal experts warn of significant risks. Using the likeness and face of real individuals without explicit consent may violate image rights and lead to legal consequences.
