China youth adopt long-term hotel living as housing alternative

A growing trend among young people in China involves choosing long-term hotel stays as an alternative to traditional home ownership or apartment rentals. Rather than living with parents or navigating the complexities of the rental market, some individuals are opting to reside in hotels for months or even years.

In Shanghai, one professional reported spending approximately 7,500 NDT per month to live in a mid-range hotel near her workplace. This choice allows her to eliminate long commutes and avoid domestic chores such as cleaning and laundry, effectively trading a portion of her income for time and convenience.

Similarly, in Shenzhen, others have moved into budget hotels to avoid the frequent disruptions and instability associated with traditional residential leases. These individuals view hotel living as a way to optimize their lifestyle and reduce the logistical burdens of urban living.
