China youth unemployment crisis driven by AI adoption
A new report indicates that China is facing a structural youth unemployment crisis driven by rapid artificial intelligence adoption and a lack of government intervention. While the Chinese Communist Party promotes AI as a symbol of national progress, there are reportedly no parallel policies to retrain displaced workers or provide adequate social safety nets.
The shift is particularly impacting the programming sector, which previously served as the backbone of the digital economy. As AI-generated code usage surged from 20–30 per cent in 2025 to as high as 90 per cent in some firms by mid-2026, many of the country's 7–9.4 million programmers have faced mass layoffs at major platforms including Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance, Meituan, and JD.com.
Displaced professionals are increasingly forced to seek manual labor, such as work as electricians, plumbers, or carpenters, in their hometowns. This labor shift coincides with a broader economic slowdown, a declining real estate sector, and shifting global supply chains, which further limit opportunities for new graduates entering the workforce.
