China youth unemployment hits 17.9% amid record graduate influx

China is facing a significant youth employment crisis as the youth unemployment rate rose to 17.9% in July, an 11-month high. This surge comes as a record 12.7 million university graduates enter the labor market, creating a sharp mismatch between the growing number of educated job seekers and a cooling economy.

Economic data indicates a slowdown in growth momentum, with GDP growth decelerating in the second quarter. While high-tech manufacturing and exports are driving some growth, traditional sectors that historically absorbed large numbers of graduates—such as real estate, finance, and internet services—are experiencing declines. This structural shift is creating a skills gap, as rapid advancements in AI and industrial upgrading increase demand for high-tech specialists while leaving many liberal arts and general graduates without suitable entry-level roles.

Although the Chinese government has launched initiatives to support employment, including subsidies and expanded recruitment in the public sector, analysts suggest these measures may only offer short-term stability. The underlying issues of weak domestic demand, low private sector investment confidence, and the mismatch between new industrial requirements and graduate skill sets remain significant challenges for the labor market.
