China Zorrilla electric ferry arrives in Uruguay

The China Zorrilla, the world’s largest 100% electric ferry, has arrived in Uruguay, marking a significant milestone for sustainable maritime transport in the Rio de la Plata region. Built by Incat Tasmania in Australia, the 130-meter-long vessel arrived at the port of Nueva Palmira via a specialized heavy-lift ship after a 15,000-kilometer journey.

Operated by Buquebus, the ferry is designed to facilitate eco-friendly travel between Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. The vessel has a capacity for 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. To support its operation, advanced charging infrastructure is being implemented at both ports to manage its unprecedented battery system.

Uruguayan officials, including the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining, noted that the arrival aligns with the country’s long-term energy strategy, which has prioritized renewable sources for over 15 years. Buquebus President Juan Carlos López Mena stated that the investment in electric technology aims to connect the two nations more efficiently while reducing environmental impact.
