China targets 50% non‑fossil electricity by 2030
China’s newly released five‑year energy plan sets a goal for non‑fossil sources to generate half of the country’s electricity by 2030. The plan calls for integrating more than 2.8 billion kilowatts of new‑energy capacity into the grid and building a charging network capable of serving over 110 million electric vehicles. Capacity targets include about 410 million kilowatts of conventional hydropower, roughly 110 million kilowatts of nuclear power, and around 65 million kilowatts combined for biomass, solar‑thermal, geothermal and marine energy. Coal‑generated electricity fell to 49.7 % of total output in the first half of 2026, dropping below the 50 % threshold for the first time. The broader plan also aims for a total installed power capacity of 5.4 billion kilowatts by 2030 and promotes a coordinated main‑distribution‑microgrid electricity system.
