China's AI Industry Launches Face‑Licensing Market for Video Creators

Chinese AI platforms are paying individuals to license their faces for use in AI‑generated videos. Shenzhen‑based ActID and Chengdu‑based New Claw have opened marketplaces where participants – ranging from models to retirees – can earn $15 to $700 per licensing deal. The services support the rapid production of microdramas, short‑form videos that accounted for over 95 % of the 128,000 episodes released in the first quarter of 2026.

The platforms claim to provide a consent‑based alternative to unauthorized deepfakes, monitoring the internet for misuse and offering legal assistance. However, concerns persist after incidents of non‑consensual face use surfaced, including a high‑viewed video that was later removed. The emerging business model is reshaping cost structures for Chinese film and advertising production while raising questions about biometric ownership and privacy.
