China's BeiDou Satellite Navigation System Completes Orbital Upgrade

China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has finished a comprehensive in‑orbit upgrade, bringing the constellation to 50 fully operational satellites. The upgrade enhances positioning accuracy to better than 10 m, speed measurement to under 0.2 m/s, and time synchronization to 20 ns, while the Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service now achieves horizontal accuracy under 0.3 m and vertical accuracy under 0.6 m.

Chinese officials say the upgraded system will provide more reliable positioning, navigation and timing services to users worldwide and will support the development of new navigation technologies. The improvement is part of a broader plan to build a ubiquitous, integrated and intelligent space‑time infrastructure by 2035.

The upgrade coincides with the sixth anniversary of the BeiDou‑3 system, highlighting its growing role in everyday life. Applications now span shared‑bike location, traffic‑signal timing, fitness tracking, family safety, broadcast timing, wind‑farm monitoring, water‑reservoir deformation detection, tunnel navigation and emergency short‑message services, illustrating how the system has moved from a strategic asset to a pervasive civilian utility.
