China's Belt and Road Investment in Africa Hits Record $33.5 Billion in H1 2026
Chinese investment under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Africa reached a record US$33.5 billion in the first half of 2026, a 254 % jump from the same period in 2025 and accounting for 67.24 % of Beijing’s global BRI outlays. Ethiopia attracted the largest share with US$18.9 billion, followed by Egypt with US$9.7 billion. While total investment surged, construction contracts fell 60.8 % to US$13.49 billion, signalling a shift from sovereign lending toward direct private‑sector investment.
Analysts link the surge to higher U.S. and European tariffs, prompting Chinese manufacturers to relocate production to Africa to retain access to Western markets. The broader trend reflects China’s deepening economic and strategic ties with the continent, driven by resource security, market expansion and infrastructure diplomacy.
The record inflow underscores Africa’s growing importance in global supply chains and its role as a key arena for great‑power competition.
