China's C919 high‑altitude variant completes first flight, European pilots find no major safety risks

On 29 July 2026, the first high‑altitude version of the Chinese C919 jet completed its inaugural flight test at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, successfully finishing all scheduled test points. The variant, developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corp of China (COMAC), features a shortened fuselage and modifications for operation at airports above 2,438 m, with a capacity of 140‑160 seats and performance meeting all domestic high‑altitude airport requirements.

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) test pilots, after months of intensive flight trials in China, reported that they observed no "significant material risks" in the C919's safety performance. Their assessment, part of the third phase of the EASA certification process, follows extensive maneuver testing and structural checks. Only targeted fault‑scenario tests of backup systems and flight computers remain before certification is pursued. The C919, already certified by the Chinese CAAC in 2022, is in commercial service with China Eastern Airlines, with 37 aircraft delivered to date.

These milestones advance the C919 program toward broader international certification and potential competition with Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families in the single‑aisle market.
