China's car export boom drives container‑shipping shift as Saleen Automotive seeks investor funding

In the first five months of 2026 China exported more than 4 million passenger vehicles, a 63 % increase over the same period a year earlier. Analysts at Veson Nautical estimate that around two million cars will be moved in containers this year, roughly double the volume shipped by dedicated car carriers (RoRo) in 2025. The surge has forced shippers to use container vessels for automobile transport, raising demand for container space on routes from Asia to Europe, the Middle East and South America and requiring special securing systems, especially for electric vehicles with lithium‑ion batteries.

Meanwhile, historic U.S. automaker Saleen Automotive, known for its high‑performance Ford Mustangs, is struggling financially amid the industry's rapid shift toward electrification and advanced software. The company launched a direct‑investment platform offering shares from $1,000 to $50,000 with perks such as meetings with founder Steve Saleen, but investor response has been limited. Saleen’s plight reflects broader challenges faced by smaller manufacturers as Chinese firms like BYD, Geely and others dominate the global market with massive investments in EV technology.
