China Communist Party holds fifth plenum to strengthen discipline FAST-MOVING

The Communist Party of China (CPC) has commenced a four-day closed-door meeting in Beijing, known as the fifth plenum of the 20th Central Committee. The gathering, which runs from October 26 to October 29, 2026, focuses on advancing “full and rigorous party self-governance” to enhance internal discipline, combat corruption, and ensure official loyalty to central leadership.

The plenum occurs approximately one year before the next major party congress, where President Xi Jinping is widely expected to secure a historic fourth term. Analysts suggest the meeting serves as a critical period for political reorganization and aligning cadres with Beijing’s strategic priorities.

The meeting follows significant political shifts and purges within the party, particularly within the People's Liberation Army. Reports indicate a notable reduction in Central Committee attendance, with some estimates suggesting the turnout may be the lowest since 1976. Currently, eight seats in the Central Committee remain vacant, and approximately 15 members are reportedly under investigation.
