China's Ethnic Unity Law condemned by Tibetan diaspora in India

Representatives of the Tibetan community in Northeast India held a press conference in Guwahati to denounce China’s newly enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Law, saying it seeks to erase Tibetan identity, language, religion and culture. They cited the self‑immolation of activist Lobga Rangzen outside the United Nations headquarters on 2 July 2026 and noted that more than 170 Tibetans have self‑immolated since 2009 in protest of Chinese policies. The speakers also warned that Chinese dam projects on the Brahmaputra (Yarlung Tsangpo) could threaten millions downstream in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

The Tibetan Parliament‑in‑Exile continued its advocacy in New Delhi, meeting with multiple Indian MPs during the Monsoon Session. Led by Deputy Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, the delegation urged Indian lawmakers to scrutinise the law, highlighting its potential to accelerate forced assimilation of Tibetans, Uyghurs, Southern Mongolians and other non‑Han groups and its implications beyond China’s borders.
