China's export surge pressures South Korean industrial sectors

South Korean industries, including steel, automobiles, and petrochemicals, are facing significant pressure due to China's domestic economic slowdown and subsequent surge in exports. This phenomenon, often described as a ‘China dilemma,’ occurs because China's oversupply of goods is being pushed into global markets at low prices to compensate for weak domestic demand.

In the automotive sector, Chinese passenger car exports rose by 71.8% between January and August, even as domestic sales fell by 24.6%. This has led to increased competition for South Korean manufacturers. While Kia saw a 5.1% growth in global sales in September, Hyundai experienced a 16% decline. Meanwhile, BMW is implementing restructuring measures, including potential job cuts in Germany, to improve profitability amid intense competition and sluggish sales in China.

The steel and petrochemical sectors are similarly impacted. Low-priced Chinese steel is depressing domestic market prices in South Korea, threatening the viability of local producers. In petrochemicals, China's aggressive expansion of ethylene production capacity has created a global supply glut, making it difficult for South Korean companies to compete in third-party markets.
