China's gold market shifts with paper gold ban and new airport retail offerings

China's major banks have stopped paper gold trading for private customers at the Shanghai Gold Exchange, requiring open leveraged positions to be settled or converted into physical gold. The spot price of gold remains near the $4,000 per ounce level, while Newmont Corporation reported a record $2.2 billion free cash flow, highlighting stable operating cash flows despite market volatility.

At Shanghai Pudong International Airport, luxury jeweler Chow Tai Fook, in partnership with China Duty Free Group and the Shanghai Airport Authority, has introduced market‑priced gold jewellery. These items are priced to real‑time international rates, offering a price advantage over domestic duty‑paid outlets and a transparent, flexible buying option for departing passengers.
