China’s industrial expansion pressures European manufacturers

China is rapidly expanding its industrial capacity into high-value technology and manufacturing sectors, creating significant competitive pressure for European exporters. According to an analysis by the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Union’s share of global goods exports has declined in sectors where Chinese manufacturers have increased their presence, particularly in machinery and transport equipment.

Germany faces the highest degree of export overlap with China among major EU economies, making its manufacturing sector especially exposed. The ECB noted that China’s expanding capacity is also impacting European exports to the Chinese market, as domestic Chinese production increasingly replaces goods previously sourced from European suppliers. This trend is most visible in industries tied to automotive and industrial machinery supply chains.

In Anhui Province, Chinese manufacturing demonstrates high-speed adaptability and scale. For instance, production facilities in Wuhu City have shown the ability to coordinate complex supply chains to meet urgent international demands, such as delivering 20,000 mobile air conditioners to Europe within a seven-day window. Additionally, Chinese firms are increasingly pursuing targeted global solutions, such as providing electric sightseeing boats and photovoltaic energy storage systems for the Maldives.
