China's investment in Nicaraguan airport sparks U.S. security concerns

U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar has raised alarms regarding China's strategic investments in Nicaragua, specifically focusing on the reconstruction and expansion of the Punta Huete airport. During a House Western Hemisphere Subcommittee hearing, Salazar warned that Beijing is establishing a “beachhead” in the Western Hemisphere through critical infrastructure projects.

The Punta Huete project, located approximately 60 kilometers from Managua, involves an estimated investment of $517.6 million. Approximately 80% of the cost, or $414 million, is being financed through a 15-year Chinese loan with a 5.2% interest rate. The project is being executed by the Chinese state-owned firm China CAMC Engineering (CAMCE).

While officially designated as a facility for passenger, cargo, and tourism use with an annual capacity of 3.5 million travelers, Salazar expressed concerns regarding its potential dual-use military capabilities. She noted that the 3,600-meter runway is suitable for wide-body aircraft and could potentially host strategic bombers, such as the Chinese Xian H-6, which could reach Washington, D.C., within three hours. The project is expected to be completed by October 2028.
