China's J‑20 stealth fighter fleet may top 500 aircraft

New estimates suggest the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) now operates more than 500 fifth‑generation J‑20 stealth fighters, potentially exceeding 600 when training and development aircraft are included. The figure is based on reports that 18 PLAAF brigades have received J‑20s, each with roughly 28 aircraft, plus additional units for training.

At a production pace of about 100–120 jets per year, China’s J‑20 fleet would outstrip the United States' F‑35A numbers, which total around 430–450 aircraft. Analysts note that the rapid expansion narrows the stealth fighter gap that has long favoured the United States, especially in the Indo‑Pacific where Beijing focuses its strategy.

The expanding fleet also includes advanced variants such as the single‑seat J‑20A with upgraded engines, radar and sensors, and the two‑seat J‑20S, which may serve command, drone control and electronic warfare roles. Together with a broader network of early‑warning, electronic‑attack aircraft and UAVs, the J‑20 growth signals a shift toward a larger, integrated Chinese air combat capability.
