China's LineShine supercomputer tops global rankings, overtaking US El Capitan

China has unveiled LineShine, a supercomputer built in Shenzhen that has been recognised by Italy's Il Post as the fastest system in the world, surpassing the United States' El Capitan. The achievement comes despite U.S. export controls that limit Chinese access to the latest graphics processing units. Chinese engineers used an alternative architecture based on less‑specialised processors, optimizing them to deliver comparable performance while consuming less power.

The development aligns with President Xi Jinping's strategic push for technological self‑reliance. At the same time, Chinese AI firm Zhipu AI introduced its GLM‑5.2 model, reporting results close to leading U.S. models in areas such as cybersecurity and software vulnerability detection. Analysts note that while U.S. models like ChatGPT and Claude still lead overall, China's rapid progress narrows the gap and challenges Washington's restriction policy.

The supercomputer and the AI model illustrate Beijing's broader effort to reduce dependence on Western hardware and to foster homegrown high‑performance computing capabilities.
