China's LineShine Supercomputer Tops TOP500, Overtaking US El Capitan

China’s LineShine system, installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen, claimed the No. 1 position in the June 2026 TOP500 list. It achieved a sustained performance of 2.198 exaflops, about 20 % faster than the U.S.‑built El Capitan, and is the first supercomputer to break the 2 exaflop barrier using only central processing units (CPUs). The machine relies on roughly 45 000 domestically‑designed LX2 processors, a proprietary high‑speed interconnect called LingQi, and runs on China’s Kylin Linux‑based OS, consuming about 42 MW of power.

The achievement comes amid tight U.S. export controls on advanced chips and GPUs, which have forced China to develop home‑grown hardware. A Chinese centre official said the supercomputer is “the result of advances in a series of fundamental technological bottlenecks.” While the ranking underscores China’s growing high‑performance‑computing capability and signals technological sovereignty, the system placed fourth on an AI‑focused benchmark because it lacks GPUs, which dominate modern AI workloads.

The United States still occupies three of the top five positions, and El Capitan remains the second‑ranked system. LineShine’s success marks China’s first return to the TOP500 summit since the Sunway TaihuLight held the spot in 2017, highlighting an intensified techno‑strategic rivalry between the two powers.
