China's Lineshine tops global supercomputer rankings

China announced its new high‑performance computer, Lineshine, which has taken the top spot on the TOP500 list, surpassing the United States’ El Capitan system.

Lineshine is reported to deliver several billion calculations per second, enabling faster work in AI training, climate modelling, nuclear research and other data‑intensive tasks.

The achievement comes after Washington imposed export restrictions on advanced chips, and Chinese officials say the machine relies largely on domestic chip design and engineering, marking a strategic win in the ongoing US‑China technology competition.
