China's London embassy plan faces UK High Court challenge

A group of local residents has taken the UK government to the High Court over its approval of a large new Chinese embassy on the historic Royal Mint Court site near the Tower of London. The Royal Mint Court Residents’ Association argues that ministers failed to consider that the embassy could be used to curtail protests or facilitate "transnational repression" of Chinese dissidents, and that any conditions imposed on the diplomatic premises would be unenforceable.

The case comes amid heightened scrutiny of Chinese diplomatic missions after convictions of Chinese‑British nationals for spying on Hong Kong activists. Britain’s housing minister Steve Reed maintains the approval was fully examined, while Chinese officials have denied espionage allegations. The legal challenge highlights growing concerns over security, foreign influence and the balance between diplomatic privileges and domestic protest rights.
