China’s Military Satellite Expansion Narrows US Space Advantage
U.S. defense officials say China has rapidly expanded its military satellite constellation, now operating more than 510 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) satellites. The fleet far exceeds the United States’ estimated 250‑300 ISR satellites and enhances Beijing’s ability to monitor troop movements, naval activity and missile launches across the Indo‑Pacific.
The growth is supported by advanced technologies such as synthetic‑aperture radar, infrared sensors and artificial‑intelligence‑driven image processing. Integrated with the BeiDou navigation system, the network also improves precision targeting and the guidance of anti‑ship ballistic missiles. U.S. Space Force and Pentagon analysts warn the expanding Chinese capability erodes America’s long‑standing space advantage and could complicate future military responses in the region.
