China's Ministry of Commerce Launches National Security Probe into Imported Office Equipment

China's Ministry of Commerce announced on August 5, 2026 that it is conducting the country's first foreign‑trade national security investigation. The probe targets imported printing and copying office equipment that contains foreign system software, such as drivers and embedded code developed abroad.

The investigation will assess import volumes, the impact of the products, technologies or services on national security interests, domestic demand, and the effect on China's own office‑equipment industry. It will also examine relevant foreign government policies and any other matters affecting national security in foreign trade. The ministry may use questionnaires, hearings, on‑site checks or commissioned parties, and will issue a report within 12 months, with possible extensions. Interested parties can submit written comments within 30 days of the announcement.
