China's new‑generation energy storage capacity jumps 61% to 153 million kW by June 2026

The National Energy Administration announced that China's installed capacity of new‑generation energy storage rose 61 % year‑on‑year, reaching 153 million kilowatts at the end of June 2026. The capacity grew from 3 million kW to 136 million kW during the 14th Five‑Year Plan (2021‑2025), roughly doubling each year. Lithium‑ion battery storage remains the dominant technology, while other storage technologies have also made rapid progress. Administrator Xu Jilin said the storage sector is a key technology for large‑scale renewable development and reliable electricity supply. The administration said it will work during the 15th Five‑Year Plan (2026‑2030) to boost technological innovation and industrial development of new‑generation storage, aiming for higher‑quality growth of the sector.
