China's Northeast Heatwave Drives Record Power Demand and Boosts Foreign Beach Tourism

A severe heatwave swept northeastern China in early August, with Dalian recording a high of 37 °C, nearly 10 °C above the August average. Thousands of beachgoers crowded the pebble beach of Fujiazhuang Park, many seeking relief that proved insufficient as the sea was also unusually hot. The State Grid Corporation of China reported record electricity demand across the northern, northeastern and eastern regions as residents cranked up air‑conditioning.

At the same time, the extreme temperatures have spurred a surge of foreign visitors seeking cooler destinations within China, a trend dubbed “China Cool.” Tourists are drawn to naturally cooler spots such as Changbai Mountain in the northeast and the sandstone peaks of Zhangjiajie in central China. Visa‑free policies, extensive cooling infrastructure in hotels, malls and transport, and safe, modern facilities are cited as key factors encouraging the influx.

The combined effect of the heatwave on domestic energy consumption and the rise in international tourism highlights both the public‑health challenges and the economic opportunities presented by China’s varied climate and infrastructure.
