China's northern power grid faces record demand amid heatwave

A severe heatwave drove electricity demand to record levels across northern, northeastern and eastern China, according to the State Grid Corporation of China. On Monday and Tuesday, the grid’s northern, northeastern and eastern regional networks recorded unprecedented loads, with peak demand in eastern Anhui reaching 69.99 million kilowatts, up 2.1 % year‑on‑year.

Affected areas include Hebei province, the port city of Tianjin, Liaoning and Shandong provinces, and Anhui. The State Grid is optimizing operations and preparing cross‑region power transmission to meet the surge. National forecasters warned that temperatures in parts of Liaoning and mountainous northeast regions could approach or exceed historical extremes in the coming ten days, urging the public to take heat‑protection measures.
