China's PLA modernization shifts Asia-Pacific strategic balance

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is undergoing a deliberate modernization process aimed at achieving a “world-class military” by 2049. This restructuring includes efforts to create a leaner force, such as the dismissal of 300,000 personnel initiated in 2015, and the reorganization of military regions into five theater commands to enhance joint operations.

Technological advancements in weaponry are fundamentally altering the strategic landscape in the Asia-Pacific. Key developments include the deployment of DF-21D and DF-26 anti-ship ballistic missiles, which challenge naval dominance by targeting carrier strike groups. Additionally, the DF-17 hypersonic glide vehicle presents interception challenges due to its unpredictable flight paths, while the Type 055 Renhai-class destroyers and J-20 stealth fighters further enhance China's maritime and aerial capabilities.
