China's rapid automotive development raises safety concerns
Chinese automotive companies are accelerating vehicle development at record speeds, raising concerns among both domestic authorities and international competitors regarding potential safety compromises. While traditional Western manufacturers typically require three to five years to develop new models, the standard in China is approximately two years.
The integration of artificial intelligence could further reduce this development cycle to just 18 months, according to reports from IAT Automobile Technology and the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. This rapid pace has prompted some Western companies to adopt Chinese methodologies; for instance, Renault developed the Twingo E-Tech in China within 21 months, and Volkswagen collaborated with Xpeng to produce the ID. UNYX 08 in 24 months.
However, there are growing fears that such extreme speed may lead to the cutting of critical safety checks and reduced component durability. Chinese authorities have begun tightening regulations to address these risks.
