China's renewable surge meets 2025 power demand as coal output climbs

China's renewable energy capacity reached a record 2,340 GW in 2025, representing nearly 60 % of the country's total generating capacity. Wind and solar installations together surpassed thermal power for the first time, allowing renewable sources to fully cover the increase in electricity demand caused by economic growth.

Despite this progress, coal‑fired generation rose again in the first four months of 2026, pushing power‑sector emissions higher than in 2025, though still below 2024 levels. Analysts note the rebound raises questions about the durability of the emissions decline and highlights China's continued reliance on coal for energy security amid geopolitical uncertainties. The country aims to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, with plans to add about 300 GW of new wind and solar capacity in 2026.
