China's robotics industry shifts toward large-scale commercialization

The Chinese robotics industry is transitioning from experimental demonstrations to large-scale commercial application. Recent major events, including the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai and the World Robot Conference (WRC) in Beijing, highlighted the rapid evolution of embodied AI.

At the WRC, the focus shifted from mere performance—such as dancing or walking—to practical utility. Industry experts and attendees emphasized critical metrics for commercial adoption, including operational uptime, precision, maintenance, and return on investment (ROI). While humanoid robots remain a focal point, there is an increasing recognition of the need for specialized forms, such as wheeled or quadruped robots, to suit specific industrial environments like warehouses or disaster zones.

Data indicates significant market momentum in China. In the first half of the year, humanoid robot shipments exceeded 40,000 units, accounting for a 97% global market share. The China Electronic Society predicts the humanoid robot market could reach approximately 870 billion yuan by 2030. Despite this growth, challenges remain regarding technical complexity, real-world application, and safety and ethical standards.
