China's Secret Surveillance Database Exposed

Researcher Mark Huper accidentally discovered an unsecured web page belonging to the public‑security bureau in Jiangjiao, China. The page provided access to a massive database that stored detailed personal information on thousands of foreign residents, including medical histories, fuel payments, travel itineraries, ethnicity, occupation, and family status. The system also flagged individuals from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and from key countries such as Israel, Egypt, Iran, Morocco, Pakistan and Sudan.

The data could be downloaded because the login fields were pre‑filled, allowing Huper to collect large volumes of records over several months before the page was taken down in May. The breach revealed the extent of China’s internal surveillance of foreign nationals and raised concerns about privacy and security for the affected individuals.
