China's Shanghai Aishengna Begins Mass Production of DUV Lithography Machines
Shanghai Aishengna Electronic Technology Group, a state-owned firm created to advance China’s semiconductor self‑sufficiency, has started mass production of domestically developed immersion deep‑ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. The company aims to manufacture about five units this year and increase output to roughly 20 machines by 2027. The move is part of President Xi Jinping’s broader campaign to reduce reliance on foreign equipment amid tightening U.S. export controls. Analysts note that while the breakthrough marks a strategic step forward, the Chinese DUV tools remain technologically behind Dutch leader ASML and still require extensive validation to prove reliability in high‑volume fabs. The long‑term challenge for China remains the acquisition of extreme‑ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, which currently has no viable domestic substitute.
