China-US Space Race Intensifies as Shenzhou 23 Launches

China launched the Shenzhou 23 crew to the Tiangong space station on 25 May 2026 for a six‑month mission, with one astronaut scheduled to stay a year to study microgravity effects such as bone loss, muscle atrophy, radiation exposure and sleep disturbances. The mission demonstrates China's rapid orbital‑maneuver capability and supports its goal of landing humans on the Moon by 2030. The United States continues its Artemis program, with Artemis II completing a lunar fly‑by and Artemis III preparing for crewed lunar surface operations using Orion and commercial landers. China also plans to send the Chang’e 7 probe to the Moon’s south pole later this year. Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes cited long‑term health issues from his 2006 flight, underscoring the challenges of extended spaceflight.
